I started my PhD thesis in the Mitchell group in 2007. Before that I was doing my Master's thesis in the group of Oliver Benson at Humboldt University Berlin.
What I am most interested in is the use of quantum optics to improve the sensitivity of the most sensitive magnetical sensors. One type of extremely sensitive magnetical sensors are atomic magnetometers. They rely on the interaction between light and atoms. My interest is to use quantum states of light to improve their performance. The quantum states of light we use are single photons, entangled photon pairs and squeezed states. We generate these states in cavity-enhanced down-conversion processes, i.e. a nonlinear crystal produces pairs of photons and this process is enhanced by an optical resonator that contains the crystal. The quantum states are then filtered to the right frequency for interaction with atoms by an extremely narrowband filter that is based on an atomic transition. The filtered photons serve as input states of the atomic magnetometer. We could demonstrate for both, entangled photons and squeezed states that the sensitivity can be improved over what would be possible with classical states of light.
